What is a geothermal temperature measurement chain or ground temperature probe?

A ground temperature probe or temperature measurement chain is a system consisting of multiple temperature sensors arranged in a chain along the geothermal probe. It is used to monitor temperature changes in the subsurface of a geothermal field.

An example of such a system is the GWE GeoTrace®.

What determines the pressure rating of a geothermal probe?

The pressure rating of geothermal probes and PE pipes depends on the material wall thickness. These are specified in SDR classes: SDR 11 for 16 bar, SDR 9 for 20 bar. SDR describes the ratio of the pipe's outer diameter to its wall thickness.

Why should plastic fittings be used instead of brass ones in geothermal chambers?

They are corrosion resistant. Brass fittings are susceptible to corrosion in damp environments.

What types of fittings are found in a geothermal distribution chamber?

Simple shut-off units (ball valves) are installed in the supply line, while flow meters or circuit balancing valves are installed in the return line.

How can geothermal probes be routed through concrete walls in a watertight manner?

Geothermal connection lines can be routed securely and watertight through watertight concrete (WU concrete) using special sealing systems. So-called wall sleeve plates or penetration plates are used for this purpose. Examples include the GWE TightWall (for walls) and GWE TightFloor (for floor slabs) systems.

How do you mix heat transfer fluids for geothermal applications?

Heat transfer fluids, such as GWE Optiflow can easily be diluted with tap water to achieve the desired level of frost protection. It is important to prepare the mixture in accordance with the specifications in the product information or data sheet (e.g., GWE Optiflow N).
